Lara Stone was born on December 23, 1983 in Geldrop, the Netherlands to a Dutch mother and a British father. She grew up in the small town of Mierlo in the Netherlands. At the age of 16, she was expelled from high school and sent away to Paris by her mother.

Born Marisa Bertetta in Santa Cruz, California, she was first "discovered" at age 16 walking through a San Francisco cafe by two Italian modeling agents.
